Yohiro character design and development

Yohiro hairystles

In the Edo period, it was rather unusual for a wealthy male to fashion a short hairtysle, although not uncommon in young male samurai.

I wanted Yohiro to be more relatable to the viewer, I felt that by giving him long hair this may be hard to achieve. So, I researched and looked into a variety of short male hairstyles often seen in asian pop culture and anime today. The designs below are a result of that research.

Curtains are extremely popular and are fashioned by asian idols as well as in tv and anime. I felt that this hairstyle would be the best style to go for, so experimented in a number of directions and positions the curtains to fall in.

I decided to go with hairstyle 2 on slide 2, my reasoning behind this is that I have never seen that particular style of curtain in an animated film or manga before. The other hairstyles, except for no.1, are more common and I have seen them or variations on those designs before. I wanted to use a completely knew look for Yohiro.

No.1 was not aesthetically pleasing enough for me to justify taking forward, where as, the chosen hairstyle not only looked good but also fun.

The scope

Yohiro final garment and hair designs

All the garments Yohiro wears, do not differ in style from the template designs created earlier in the development process. This being because, the generic garment designs for all the garment pieces Yohiro wears, do not have multiple variations of style like kimono do.

Yohiro will fashion 3 different outfits in the story, this being his 2 everyday outfits (as seen on slides 1 and 2) and his occasional outfit seen on slide 3.
