Zukin and fukmen are the hoods and masks that concealed the identity of a shinobi. Paintings, photographs, tv, cartoons and more have depicted these garments wrapped around the wearers face in a number of ways.
Design no.1 appeared to be the most authentic, I determined this after cross examining this design with research of photographs and painting of shinobi wearing zukin and fukmen.
I like the other two designs, however, these representations are not accurate so I did not choose either to take forward.
Throughout history, japanese shinobi have been depcited wearing ninja hoods and baggy trousers in all black, accompaniedby weapons such as ninja stars.
I wanted to play into this stereotype, but to make the garments accurate, therefore the relatability was still there. By doing this, I felt I would not only demonstrate I could research well, but put into practice what I had learnt and apply it to a project.
By researching all the garment names, I visually built up an image of how all of the garments should be assembled, which is displayed in the designs below.
I decided to make the garments black, except for certain elements being red, as this colour is used for camouflage, hide blood stains and conceals the wearers identity.
The shinobi in this story will fashion a japanese shortbow called a hankyū, which too was a popular weapon of choice for the shinobi.
