Kikai's clothing was inspired by tales of japanese yosei, which means fairy in english. These tales depict beautiful woman with long flowing hair and long dresses in naturistic colours e.g. blues, greens and pinks. I wanted to use these tales as inspiration for kikai, as she too is a japanese fairy.
Originally, I wanted her outer kimono to look lavish and regal, so I went with a red and white colour scheme. But this did not fit the yosei description, nor kikai's persona, which is mysterious and free. Therefore, I went back to the drawing board and decided to go with the same colours that often yosei are seen wearing.
I chose to combine the blues and greens with waves and a red crowned cranes pattern. Red crown cranes soar through the skys and kikai too is a red crowned crane, so I wanted to portray her soaring through the skys using this pattern combination.
I originally wanted the inner kimono to be blue, like the outer kimono, but after designing various blue kimono I realised that the blue upon blue combination would not work.
The opposite of a cool colour palette is a warm one, so I eventually I experimented with pinks, which contrasted nicely against the cooler outer kimono colour scheme.
After trial and error, I finally came to choosing these two garments and bringing them together to create kikai's final chosen outfit. As kikai is only mentioned in the story a couple of times I did not feel the need to create multiple outifts for her. But, I feel that the colours and patterns used follow the same dress code that all other japanese yosei do. I also added elements that reflected her true nature in the red crown crane pattern.
